IceBreakers for Millenials

IceBreakers for Millennials

Originally, I planned to attend a fun, low-pressure networking/MeetUp this evening. After a week of hosting summer camp for 7 tween/teen girls, and dealing with my stolen car (cops, detectives, mechanics, insurance adjusters, relaying info between my parents and my boyfriend) a week before I head out of the country on my first solo vacation in...too long, socializing didn't seem like a reasonable option for me, tonight.

This is a long-winded way of saying that 10 days of shenanigans exhausted my introvert reserves. I needed to 1. sweat and 2. hermit/exhale tonight. Even the best laid plans, and all. So, I ran my little heart out at bootcamp (so many stairs! and sprints!) and now I'm lounging on the couch watching bad TV between my cat and my boyfriend.

Am I bummed I missed the event? Yes. I had coffee with the host a few weeks ago, and she said asking "what do you do," a classic DC networking opener, was banned for the first five minutes of meeting a new person. That made me think of some icebreakers that don't involve talking about work, geared towards the millenial set.

It's half bitter, half sarcastic, half truth. Feel free to try them out at your next cynical social gathering.

1. What was your first Xanga/LiveJournal/AIM screenname?
2. When you were a kid, did you consider options besides "college" for your life after high school?
3. Why did you first join MySpace?
4. Which "American Dream" accomplishment do you most want for yourself (house, car, no debt, well-paying job with benefits)?
5. Do you have a second, third, fourth job? What are they? (This may be cheating.)
6. Which student loan company do you think is the most evil?
7. What's the most awful/bizarre/strange thing you'd do to have your student loan debt wiped out?
8. How often do you call your Congressional Representatives?
9. Do you actually call, or use email or a service like ResistBot?
10. Where were you on 9/11? (Morbid, maybe, but a formative, and certainly memorable moment for most of us.)
11. How many Old Navy American flag tees have you owned in your life?
12. If climate change speeds up, would you prefer to live near the new coastline or in the sprawling expanse of desert?
13. At what age did you give up on owning a house in the city/metropolis you love?
14. What is your highest level of education, and how un-related is it to your current profession?
15. How hard do you roll your eyes when you hear things like "MILLENIALS ARE SO LAZY THESE DAYS! THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT HARD WORK IS."
16. As a millenial, which industry would you personally like to kill off?
17. Since we're accused of travelling instead of saving money, what's your dream extravagant, luxury vacation?
18. How many avocados do you consume a week?
19. Which of your family members posts the most egregious crap on social media?
20.  What's your favorite meme page?
21. If 45 really brings about the end times this week, what will be your biggest regret?
22. Harry Potter, Hunger Games, or Chronicles of Narnia?
23. How old were you when you got your first cell phone?
24. Number Munchers, Carmen San Diego, Oregon Trail or Amazon Trail?
25.  Tell your best online dating story.
